Papers of Finley Peter Dunne and his family, 1898-1948.

The papers contain original manuscripts for five Mr. Dooley stories : "Mr. Dooley on Divorce," "Mr. Dooley on 'Jawn D. Rockefeller'," "Mr. Dooley on the Pursuit of the Rich," "Mr. Dooley on the Rising of the Subject Races," and "Mr. Dooley on the Sport of Kings." The collection also contains typescripts for Philip Dunne's movie work including a synopsis for the "Gracie Fields Story," a temporary script for his adaptation of "How Green Was My Valley," and a breakdown for "The Rains Came." The collection also contains the reminiscences of Margaret Abbott Dunne, the 1939 diary of son-in-law Bennett Hammond, two drafts of a humorous column by Hammond and a brief comic autobiography by him. There are three pieces of Dunne correspondence : a response to an invitation; a humorous reply to a salesman with a medicine for "technical neuritis"; and one letter to John Kendrick Bangs, 1898 December 12, promising a new "Mr. Dooley" story. Other correspondence includes a letter to C.R. Dooley praising Hammond; a letter from Ray Spence to Margaret Abbott Dunne thanking her for joining the Theatre Alliance; and a 1939 letter from Philip Dunne to Los Angeles mayor Fletcher Bowron regarding a Motion Picture Democratic Committee Bazaar. The bulk of the collection consists of 456 letters, 1941-1947, between Margaret Dunne Hammond and Bennett Hammond while he was on active duty as a U.S. Navy supply officer on board the submarine tender U.S.S. Pelias and the transport ship U.S.S. President Adams. There are also a few letters from Bennett Hammond's mother and children. The letters discuss Margaret's secretarial job and Hammond's naval life and duties. Specific topics include an attack of Dengue fever; life on the home front including rationing; divorce from first wife; his children; drinking binges; social life; Auckland, N.Z.; Noumea, New Caledonia; and future plans. In addition there are photographs of the Dunne and Hammond families, a European vacation (honeymoon?), a European golf tour and Bennett Hammond's photographs from the Navy. Miscellaneous items include Peter Dunne's scrapbook from St. Bernard's Preparatory School, 1916, and yearbook from Middlesex School, 1924; Bennett Hammond's music notebook, handwritten sheet music, financial papers, biographical clippings, naval papers including duty lists, appointment calendar and notebook from the U.S.S. Pelias and miscellaneous souvenirs including nameplate, epaulettes, a knife and a puzzle.
